’12 Days of Christmas’ Trees

Christmas day is over for another year and for many of us today is about eating leftovers and watching telly or braving shopping sales out on the high street. Boxing Day is also known as the start of the strange limbo period between Christmas and new year where we easily forget what day it is and consider renewing our gym memberships.

For some in the oil and gas industry, this limbo period may feel like the bleakest for many years as falling oil prices and doom and gloom media coverage about the future of the North Sea have many people worried about the year ahead. In an era of news bulletins streaming from smart phones in the palm of our hand and friends on social media loudly voicing their opinions, it’s easy to forget that this industry is accustom to its own nature to peak and dip as circumstances change.

Back in 1998 when oil was less than $10 a barrel for a few days, our mobile phones still had antennas, the creator of Facebook was 14, and the BBC rolling news channel had only been on our screens for a few months. Needless to say, a lot has changed in terms of how much information we are bombarded with on an almost constant basis. At times like this, we as an industry need to communicate clearly and factually with each other, and not be distracted by too many extreme opinions.

We still have up to 24billion barrels to extract, shale and of course the decommissioning industry. There is a lot of work still to be done and now is the time to think smart and collaborate on how best to accomplish this. The next year of our industry does not have to be about individual loss, but it also does not have to be about individual gain. Let this season of giving remind us that we are happier when we spread some joy and share our wealth, whether it be from a box of chocolates or some industry advice.

For the next few days though, we could probably all benefit from indulging in a few more turkey sandwiches and mince pies. And remember, one of the best ways to come together and have fun at this time of year is a good old fashioned sing song. With that in mind… here is our own 12 Days of Christmas, as a gift from us to you…Enjoy!
